Wasta-Linux 24.04.1 is now available for download as a stable release of this newest version of Wasta-Linux based on Ubuntu 24.04. Download it from the Wasta-Linux website: https://wastalinux.org/home/download/
Here are a few key notes:
-
Interface: Cinnamon remains the default interface, with Gnome (Ubuntu’s default interface) alternately available from the login screen.
-
Long-Term Support: Security updates provided by Ubuntu through April 2024
-
Linux Kernel: 6.8 - This kernel version will not change so you will have more stability to your system if all of your hardware works well with it. If you have hardware requiring a newer Linux Kernel, post to the Wasta-Linux User Forum to ask for assistance.
SIL Software Availability
Linux for language development and BT will remain restricted by the older versions of Paratext, Bloom, and Fieldworks available in Linux while we wait on re-architected offerings of these core SIL apps from the development teams.
Do note that Paratext Lite continues to progress in ways that make it by far the best choice for BT work in Linux. Please check it out if you haven’t evaluated it for your needs recently! Yes, the interface differs from the full Paratext version, but in many ways it may be more intuitive and easy to use for many users – while at the same time having all the features that are needed for daily translation work.
This said, I understand the older versions of (full) Paratext, Bloom, and FIeldworks available in Linux may require many users to either run a Windows virtual machine inside of Linux or simply fully migrate back to Windows. For others, either due to security concerns or hardware limitations, you may need to (or simply prefer to) stay with Linux even during this time of limited SIL software compatibility. Regardless, we can all keep the SIL developers in mind, they need our support now more than ever!
