Welcome to the community site @silver_blaze,

Can I know which keyboard have you installed? and which device are you using?

Please try to update to the latest version of Keyman.

Thank you!

Hello, thank you for replying so quickly.
I have the latest version of keyman installed and i am using the Sitelen Pona (Pochin, UCSUR) keyboard. I am on a Samsung s20.
I have absolutely no idea how to get it to work properly. The instructions say i need to use a compatible font, but i don’t know how to get that.

The Toki pona keyboards are a bit awkward because the script isn’t encoded in Unicode so they are very reliant on the specific font they are designed for. We cannot install a system-wide font on Android devices, but we can install the font within the Keyman application (which we do). I’ve just installed that keyboard on my Samsung S21 and the keyboard works within the app and displays the font.

I see, thank you very much for explaining. So if we can only use it with ilthe app, all we can do is type on the screen, we can’t send it anywhere, right?
Also, I’m not a developer so forgive my ignorance but, why can’t it be put in unicode ?

If you are really wanting to use the script on a phone, you can copy the text from Keyman and text or email it to someone. Then, if they are on a phone they probably have to copy it into the Keyman app as well. (Of course, they need the keyboard installed also so that the font is installed.) That’s not really fun.

If it’s sent by email to someone, and if they have the font installed on their computer, they can view the email/text on their computer.

The keyboard package installs the font on a computer, so then it is available in all apps on the computer.

I realize this is awkward. I was not told this, but my impression is the reason the keyboards and fonts were created is so that more materials can be produced and more evidence will be available to prove to Unicode that the script is in use. It’s a chicken and egg kind of thing. You need a font and keyboard to produce materials to prove it needs encoding, but it’s hard to use before it gets encoded.
