Video Q / REAP Q

A SayMore project that I’m consulting for took simultaneous and separate iPhone video along with H4n audio recordings. I advised the linguist to use +Add Files to add the corresponding video (.MOV) files to each session of SayMore, i.e. each session is based on an audio (.WAV) file.

However, the linguist user wants to do best practice and REAP the entire SayMore project to SIL Language & Culture Archives. It has been a while since I’ve tried to do this myself (sigh), and so I don’t know the details of what works nowadays or not. (I had him install RAMP first,) he tried the Project | Archive with RAMP menu button, but the upload was not successful. Was this due to the large file sizes from the addition of video?

The only thing I can think of to do next is to advise him to temporarily remove the video files from each session, RAMP/REAP the entire SayMore project, and then REAP the video files separately (and manually re-add the video files to the SayMore project). Does anyone have a better suggestion? Is there a place online (or email) where I should be asking this question to REAP tech help?

thanks,
Joyce

In general, it should be possible to include the videos for RAMP/REAP upload. I don’t know if there is a maximum size or if flakiness in the connection could be causing it to fail. Maybe @Jeremy_Nordmoe could provide some insights. I know they are working on a major change to the archiving process, but I believe the existing process still works. Very soon I expect to be releasing a new version of SayMore with has some improvements to the archiving process. I don’t know that it fixes any actual bugs that would be causing the problem your seeing, but if you can’t get it to work, you could wait and try it again with the new version. If it is a size/bandwidth problem, then removing the videos might be the best option for now, but I agree that it would be preferable to include them (unless you get specific direction to the contrary from the archiving gurus. If necessary, I suppose we could add an option to exclude videos.

I highly recommend that your colleague wait for RAMP 4.x to be released before proceeding (coming in March or April). The new system will handle SayMore projects much better than the old. If they have specific questions about RAMP or the new REAP, have them contact me directly.
