Very 1st use! import data, tool, etc (!) HELP!

Hi,
I’m a very new user! please HELP
Support told me to write here to get suggestions:

  • which tool have I use to write source data in XHTML or LIFT format?
  • which differences are between XHTML and LIFT format?
  • do you have an example for XHTML or LIFT format?
    thanks!
    Phil

Hi Phil
Do you already have a lexicon that you are wanting to use to create a Dictionary App Builder app? Is it currently in the Flex (FieldWorks Language Explorer) software? That tool has options to export data in XHTML and in LIFT formats. There are several other lexicographic tools that use the same format. The Dictionary creation tools | SIL Global page might give you some more information.

If your lexical data is not already in Flex, you may want to contact SIL Lexical Services Contact | SIL Global to explore options for getting your data into a form that DAB can use. They have some lexicography course materials on that site as well.

But if this doesn’t answer your question, please write again and maybe someone else can give you a better answer!

Most people choose the XHTML format since it gives you way more control over the design (you basically pre-design a lot in FLEx). The search function is a little better in LIFT since it will highlight the target word while XHTML finds the same results, only without highlighting. However, there are a few bugs with LIFT that I don’t remember.

thanks Rhina,
so, XHTML is better?

Hi Drowe, thanks for your reply
really… too much entropy :smiling_face_with_tear: for a new users

So, I’ve understood the SIL-DAB can’t be used to build the app directly, but it needs a “source” for language. Isn’t it?

The source should be a LIFT or XHTML file, isn’t it?

If is true (I’ve a mac), which app can I use to build the sources words?
thanks!!! :medal_sports:

Yes, that’s correct. David Rowe gave you some info on that in his posting above. FLEx and WeSay are two possibilities. Here’s the link to the explanatory page again.
