Using quotation marks for acute not working in MS Word

A year or so ago, I created a keyboard that uses the quotation marks (0022) as a deadkey (I believe that is the correct term) to create acute accents with vowels. For whatever reason, it won’t work with a particular version of MS Word. It works on my home computer (Word 2007) and a more recent version (Word 2016), but on “Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2502 Build 16.0.18526.20144) 64-bit” it does not. It seems to work everywhere else I’ve tried it (Notepad, etc.), but for some reason, not this version of Word. Any thoughts?

I wonder if Word is intercepting the quotation mark characters and converting them to “smart quotes” (U+201C “ and U+201D ”). Looking in Help for Word for “turning off smart quotes”, it seems that there is an option to do that. (File tab, Options, Proofing tab, AutoCorrect Options, AutoFormat As You Type tab, under Replace as you type, clear the “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes” check box. But your version of Word may differ.)

Let us know what you find!

Huzzah! That did it! Thank you VERY much! This had me worried that I’d forgotten or messed something up in my code. I figured Word was catching the quotation marks and doing something with them, but wasn’t sure where to go for it. Again, thank you!!!
