Update: Language Forge S/R now supports up to 10MB media files

Here are the latest updates on sharing media between Language Forge and FieldWorks language software.

Increased file size limit from 1 MB to 10 MB

Language Forge now supports syncing media (pictures and audio) up to 10MB in size.

Syncing FieldWorks media to Language Forge

The latest version of FieldWorks (v.9.1.18.682 on 9 Dec 2022) cannot yet send/receive files larger than 1MB. A future version of Fieldworks will allow syncing larger files.

Syncing Language Forge media into FieldWorks

As of 24 Jan 2023, files of up to 10 MB can be brought from Language Forge into FieldWorks.

Upload a file (it can be larger than 1 MB) into a Language Forge entry, like so:

Then, synchronize that Language Forge project with Language Depot (Settings>Synchronize).

Next, go into FieldWorks to get those changes via Send/Receive:

After FieldWorks finishes sending and receiving, the audio file should show up in Fieldworks:

and be playable.

Audio recording codec specification

The default codec for recording on Language Forge is WEBM. Users have the option to set the recording codec for any project to WAV. Choosing to encode recordings as WAV files will result in larger files.

Audio conversion settings

In Language Forge, it is possible to save audio in formats that are incompatible with FieldWorks, such as OGG, FLAC, and M4A. It is also possible to save audio files that are larger than the Send/Receive file size limit. In order to make files compatible with Send/Receive, a project can be set to automatically convert these files to WEBM files. WEBM is compatible with FLEx and encodes high-quality audio files that are small in size. If desired, every new audio file in a project may be automatically converted to WEBM. Just select Always for the audio conversion project setting.
