Tamil Old typewriter does not work with a physical keyboard

There is a keyboard layout called Old Typewriter in the Tamil language. Only the Keyman App provides this. I am happy. Thank you.

I own an iPad 10th Generation. I have updated it to iOS version 18.5.

I have already downloaded the Keyman App on this iPad.

To obtain the aforementioned Tamil Old Typewriter keyboard, I have also set up the “Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media)” setting provided by the Keyman App.

After this, the Tamil Old Typewriter keyboard appeared on my iPad screen. I am very happy.

However, that keyboard does not switch over to the physical keyboard connected to my iPad.

Because of this, I am unable to type using the Tamil Old Typewriter keyboard through my physical keyboard.

Please help me resolve physical keyboard integration issue.

Welcome to our community, @Qutubdeen.

Thank you for supporting and continuing to use Keyman.

We’re sorry to hear that you are having difficulty typing with an external keyboard. Due to iOS limitations, we are planning to show a banner warning that an external keyboard doesn’t work in Keyman 19.0 (now v20). Please follow our progress feat(ios): Support for Bluetooth / external keyboard in Keyman for iPhone and iPad.

Thank you.

Additionally, a workaround for this would be to use KeymanWeb, which has all of the Keyman keyboards.

It works with my Bluetooth keyboard on iPhone iOS v18.1.1. Please click on this link and try typing with your external physical keyboard:

The letter displayed on the on-screen keyboard is not being registered when I type on my physical keyboard, and I have attached a video showing this issue.

Thanks for your help

The link you provided works on a physical keyboard. But it is not a Tamil Old Type writer Keyboard.

When I type the same characters as the keyboard characters shown on my iPad screen on my physical keyboard, something else is typed.

Hello @Qutubdeen,

Could you help me know which keyboard you are referring to from this page?

[Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media)]

Thanks @Qutubdeen,

It is possible to switch to Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media) keyboard by clicking on the Globe icon

Another way is to go to Keyboard Search, then click on the keyboard, and it will direct you to this page as shown:

Once you’re on this page, click on “Use keyboard online”, and then you’ll see this:

Since Keyman can’t provide full support for this, this solution will allow you to type with your physical keyboard.

Should there be further questions, please let us know.
Thank you.

The Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard Online integrates well with a physical keyboard, and it works great. I’m very happy and grateful for this.

However, there is a small glitch.

In the Tamil Old Type Writer online system, certain letters have a dot placed above them, similar to how the letter “i” in English has a dot above it. In English, pressing a single key registers the letter “i” along with its dot, without needing a separate key for the dot.

In Tamil, however, since many letters require a dot above them, there is a dedicated key for adding the dot.

In the Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard system, you need to press the dot key first and then the key for the corresponding letter.

But in the online keyboard, it works the opposite way—you have to press the letter key first and then the dot key.

மால்கம் - This is Tamil old type writer. This is correct.

But in online key board, letter registered like

மா்லக்ம - This is not correct word.

This is a minor glitch.

If this is fixed, we will have a perfect Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard.

Thanks
