Short and long-sounding vowels in Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media) keyboard

The Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard Online integrates well with a physical keyboard, and it works great. I’m very happy and grateful for this.

However, there is a small glitch.

In the Tamil Old Type Writer online system, certain letters have a dot placed above them, similar to how the letter “i” in English has a dot above it. In English, pressing a single key registers the letter “i” along with its dot, without needing a separate key for the dot.

In Tamil, however, since many letters require a dot above them, there is a dedicated key for adding the dot.

In the Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard system, you need to press the dot key first and then the key for the corresponding letter.

But in the online keyboard, it works the opposite way—you have to press the letter key first and then the dot key.

மால்கம் - This is Tamil old type writer. This is correct.

But in online key board, letter registered like

மா்லக்ம - This is not correct word.

This is a minor glitch.

If this is fixed, we will have a perfect Tamil Old Typewriter Keyboard.

Thanks

Hello @Qutubdeen,

As I check with the Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media) keyboard documentation, I see this:

The key ; () is typed after the f (combinant). You would need to follow the individual keyboard rules to produce the correct result.

Could you tell me which key order did you press to produce மால்கம் and மா்லக்ம?

Let us know. Thanks!

In Tamil, not only are dots placed above letters, but other symbols are also used above them.

There are symbols for short-sounding vowels and long-sounding vowels that appear before the letters.

Therefore, these symbols should be typed first, followed by the corresponding letters.

Some Keys

ி
ு ்

In SHIFT Mode

These are short-sounding vowels and long-sounding vowels.

வருிகேற்ன - This is not correct word

But, This is Correct word வருகிறேன் (tUpfnw;d - Typed in online Keyboard)

Therefore, Please modify the keyboard setup so that these symbols are typed first, followed by the corresponding letters.

Hello @Lorna,

I’m not familiar with Tamil language. Would you be able to help @Qutubdeen, if this modification request for this keyboard is achievable?

Thanks, Lorna.

Because it would impact too many existing users, we are not willing to change the behavior of existing keyboards. I assume you are talking about this one? Tamil Typewriter (Visual Media) keyboard

If you want to start with that keyboard, rename it, and make changes we would likely be willing to accept it as a new keyboard in the repo.

I appreciate the concern for existing users.

As you mentioned, I suggest you could release an updated version with the changes I proposed under a new name, and it could be named “Tamil Old Typewriter.”

Thanks.

We would be happy for you to create such a thing. We are a community of volunteers and rely on the larger community who understand the languages and scripts to create keyboards.

I believe you asked me this question with trust in me.

Thank you very much.

However, I am not a techie. I don’t know this technology.:grin::grin:

I asked out of enthusiasm for using a Tamil keyboard.

A person knowledgeable in technology would be the right one to do this.

Thank you.
