Newby: tested keyboard does not work after install

Hi,

I have used keyman for some months now for biblical Hebrew and its transcription. I use mostly the SIL keyboards. But I would like to add/change some things and lately I found out about developer.
Since I am a php-developer, I wanted to give it a try.

I read some of the docs and started with the original keyboards like: sil-hebrew, galaxy-hebrew-positional and sil-hebrew-transcription.

After some learning, I started to get results and got a working change. So I added more changes. Build and installed them. But after a few rounds, the keyboard stops working. It gives the default keys and not the keys I assigned to them.
When debugging and testing in developer, the keyboard is working well and gives the correct characters.

I tried uninstalling (almost) all other keyboards. Start over with a new keyboard-project. First changes go well, but then after a while the keyboard just stops working with no error whatsoever. The on-screen-keyboard is still working fine.

At the moment starting over again. Is there something I miss?
Thanks in advance.

We would need a bit more information. What operating system are you on? Are you testing on desktop or on mobile?
How many keyboards do you have installed?
Have you started over with just one of your keyboards where it works?
If you are using Windows 10 or 11, you are only allowed about 4ish transient languages. I wonder if you install more keyboards maybe it’s getting confused?

Hi Lorna,

Thanks for your reply. I work on 2 computers, exchanging files with nextcloud. The desktop is win10, the tablet is win11.

What do you mean by this?

you are only allowed about 4ish transient languages.

Keyman shows the following languages at the moment (on my tablet):

  • Dutch (with my 2 keyboards)
  • ancient hebrew:
    • hebrew sil
    • galaxy hebrew positional
  • undertermined (und-latn): IPA (SIL)
  • English (us)

I am working on 2 keyboards:
hebrew-sil and the hebrew-sil-Transliteration.
I started over with both of them on the desktop. As a new keyboard-file inside the downloaded-clone.
I had the original ones still installed in keyman. And saved mine in a different name. That went well. Although after some hours it also stopped working.

I start thinking that it has to do with restarting keyman and sometimes the whole computer. So it indeed seems that keyman gets confused or so.

In the evening when I went on, on my tablet my previous abandoned keyboard happened to be working again in keyman. And the new did not at first. After some cleaning up and restart the new ones worked.

This morning I am doing some changes on my win11 tablet. And needed to restart keyman (and computer) a few times to get the changed keyboard working.
Very annoying.

I hope this is not normal… :folded_hands::folded_hands::folded_hands:
Coming from a nice git-live-debugged-php-development this is a bit harsh and a lot of guessing to find where the problem :see_no_evil_monkey::see_no_evil_monkey::upside_down_face::upside_down_face:

At the other hand… if it comes down to this… well it is managable… And I love what I made so far. I hope it keeps working :folded_hands::folded_hands::folded_hands::folded_hands:

Ps. so far I only install the keyboards, not whole packages… :see_no_evil_monkey:

But if there is something I miss I would love to hear!
Thank you very much!!!
