Newbie question: Keyman for macOS with Clip Studio Paint and Inkscape

Do i need to know programming to use keyman on a Mac specifically for clip studio paint?

You should not need to know any programming. You can download and install Keyman, install the desired keyboard, and then you should be able to use that keyboard. If the keyboard does not work in Clip Studio Paint, but works in other apps, let us know.

Thanks! My main interest is being able to type right to left in clip studio paint- or mirror the text. Right now when I copy and paste a Hebrew paragraph, it pastes completely backwards.

If copy and paste isn’t working, then I suspect this is an issue that your application does not support right to left. It’s not a keyboard issue.

Keyman will allow you to type Hebrew characters, but [usually] right-to-left support is managed by the application, in this case, ClipStudio Paint. Graphic design programs are not always good about multilingual support; even Photoshop sometimes has issues.

If Clipstudio doesn’t support RTL languages, you can request it from them. Alternately, you may need to render the text in another tool (possibly Inkscape) and import it as an SVG or Transparent PNG.

Unfortunately, on macOS, Keyman cannot yet tag a keyboard with a right-to-left language, so it is possible that ClipStudio Paint does support RTL properly but because a LTR language is apparently selected, it doesn’t render it correctly. You could test this by installing an Apple Hebrew keyboard and trying the RTL display behaviour with that keyboard.

Inkscape is a huge help. Thank you! Can I use keyman on Inkscape to access the Hebrew keyboard?

I did a quick test with Inkscape 1.4.2 and the Galaxie Hebrew (Positional) keyboard. When I create a text area and start typing, the characters appear on the left side of the text area, but subsequent characters are placed to the left of previously typed letters and the character string shifts to the right. Not ideal for RTL typing. I’m not familiar enough with Inkscape to know if there’s a way to specify that text as being right-justified.

It seems that Inkscape (not an SIL product, by the way) has controls for RTL and LTR (since at least 2015), meaning that they intend for RTL text input/display to work.

If Inkscape doesn’t work as expected with this setting (I don’t currently have a RTL keyboard installed to test), someone may need to log a bug report with them. Bugs are usually easier to prioritize than new features.
