Meaning of "porting the Font Software to a new environment"

Hallo, can anyone explain the meaning of the last part of OFL’s definition of a “Modified Version” (“… by porting the Font Software to a new environment”), i.e. what case is meant? The FAQ goes into great details to describe various cases of “format changing” of fonts leading to a derivate and how to avoid it, but I could not find an explanation for this part of the license text. I might have overlooked something? Many thanks for clues, Marc

Hi Marc - An example of this would be a hardware device that uses the fonts for display but needs to rewrite the hinting routines in the font to accommodate the limitations of the hardware OS. That is not necessarily a change in font format, but rather a change to the font software routines. It’a a rare situation.
