I was able to reproduce the issue you reported.
When I show the virtual keyboard though, the previously typed characters suddenly appear

Superb, waiting for community power to solve this. Because if we do this that will help all latvian people to finally type on android external keyboard as they do on PC, MAC or IPAD. Because there is no other way than keyman to get letters like - ā, ž, ē, with sequence of ’ + a makes ā. All android keyboards use right Alt to produce ā - with alt+a makes ā. But no one is typing like this on PC. So affordable android tablets are not in great use for lecture typing and studies.
