I have a user whose Keyman keyboard seems to work in Word, Outlook, WhatsApp, etc. but not in browsers. So work in Google docs, Rev79, etc. is really hard in French, where the keyboard is needed. Any ideas what might be going on? I haven’t tried uninstalling and reinstalling Keyman yet, but it’s a fairly recent version of Keyman so it wasn’t that long ago that it was installed. It is Windows 11, using the Chad QWERTY keyboard, which is working fine on my Windows 11 machine. Computer has been restarted fairly recently as well.
Seeing the same problem in Firefox, Chrome and Edge…
User says that there are times when Keyman refuses to work elsewhere (or is problematic, like the keyboard is activated, but the icon doesn’t show up), but in general, Keyman is working except in browsers.
@jheath is it possible to get a diagnostic report from the user? It seems like there may be some other software on the machine that could be conflicting (it could be security software, another utility, or even malware)
I tried sending the diagnostic report from within Keyman. It prepared the report but failed to send it. Error message says: The report was not successfully sent. Error 400 posting to server.
@judy_heath_sil_org Sorry to hear that – I am not sure what would be causing that, but we’ll look into it.
Could you save the diagnostic report in the Keyman diagnostics tool, and then share it on Google Drive, Dropbox or something like that? (You can send the link in a private message to @keyman here.)
I’ve taken a look at the diagnostic report and cannot see anything immediately wrong. The only thing I noted was that Keyman did not appear to be running at the time the report was collected.
It is possible that a security software update is blocking Keyman. Would you be able to temporarily disable security software (Eset?) and try again?
If that doesn’t work, we may need to organize a remote support session to get any further.
Hi Marc, I disabled ESET protection and tried using Keyman in my browsers (both Firefox and Chrome) with no success. It worked in WORD just fine.
Jeff is planning to uninstall and reinstall Keyman this weekend. We’ll see if that helps at all.
Thx,
Judy
It is strange that it is not working in either Chrome or Firefox. Are there any browser updates that you can install? (Another user who had problems with Chrome found that updating their browser and then reinstalling the keyboard resolved the issue – Keyman IPA SIL keyboard doesn't show up - #3 by Sally_Thompson)
I installed Eset and was able to reproduce the problem. It installs extensions in the Web browsers. Disabling the extensions did not solve the problem. However there were more settings in the security setting for ESET, under webrowsing I tried disabling the monitor keyboard, this was not enough. I uninstalled ESET completely and the web browsers started working again. It appears ESET is causing the context to be reset with every keystroke. We will have to raise an issue with them and see exactly what is going on.
As a side note, I found ESET turned web browsing into a painfully slow experience even without Keyman running.
Thanks for that research. What is very interesting is that I have ESET installed on my computer, and I don’t have any difficulties - browsers are not slow, and I can type special characters with the Tchad QWERTY keyboard just fine: ɓéà.
So maybe ESET causes some sort of problem on browsers sometimes, but what are the conditions?
Hi all. OK, I uninstalled ESET and now Keyman works on Chrome (at least). I haven’t yet tried Firefox or Edge. Can type French accents using the Tchad QWERTY keyboard in CBC and Rev 79 and Google Calendar. I checked WORD and WhatsApp and I can still type accents there (as I could before).
Now I need to do something about the fact that my computer no longer has virus protection again viruses carried on USB keys… Windows Defender is on, but that seems to only protect against online viruses. Ah well, one thing at a time, I guess!
Your community rules blocked my previous post. I uninstalled ESET and now Keyman works with my internet browsers. Glad about that. Just that now I have no protection against viruses on USB keys, very common here in Chad…
Glad to hear that that resolved the problem. You should be able to continue to use ESET if you disable some of their browser protections – some trial and error may be needed to figure out the specific component that needs to be disabled/uninstalled. As @ross said, we’ll raise this with them and see how we go.
@judy_heath_sil_org I reinstalled ESET and tried to see what was the minimum setting I could disable. In the end, I had to turn off the secure all browsers toggle. This will still give you protection for scanning usb and your hard disk for viruses until we hear back from ESET. Email client protection, network access etc will still be on everything but the browser protection.
See screenshots I chose the settings cog circled beside web access protection.
Then on the next screen, I chose Browser protection and toggle off the secure all browsers option
Thanks @ross for the additional research. Judy re-installed ESET and turned off Secure all browsers, and is now able to function normally with Keyman in browsers. Just to note, I have the same ESET and browser setup as Judy, and my Keyman is working fine in browsers even though Secure all browsers is activated. Don’t know what the difference is…
