Two or three times today, I went to Keyman configuration, told it to check for updates, and it said an update was available. I told it to update, it downloaded the file, asked for permission to change my device, which I gave. After giving it a minute or so, I restarted my computer, only to find I still had Keyman 17.
I finally managed the update by downloading Keyman 18 from the website, turning off Keyman 17, and running the downloaded file. It asked again for permission to change the device, then after a bit told me to restart the computer. On restarting, Keyman did not appear for a while, and then the installer showed up again saying it was installing Keyman, then went away and now I have Keyman 18.
When I updated using the ‘Check for Updates’ feature, My Windows 11 laptop showed the standard permission to update box. After giving it permission, Keyman Dev 17 closed. No further installer opened but when I went to re-open Keyman Developer ten minutes later, version 18 opened. So it looks like for Windows 11, you just need to assume it is installing and give it a few minutes before reopening Keyman Developer.
@Steve_White, @ross is investigating and will report back here soon too. It’s possible that it is similar to what Chris reported, and just taking a long time to upgrade. Or it is possible that there was a failed upgrade that didn’t give feedback. Could you please send a diagnostic report in following the steps at https://kmn.sh/kb0040 (this diagnostic report includes the installer logs).
@Chris_Rice, that’s curious, the installer always used to give an upgrading dialog, so I will open an issue to investigate that further. It’s certainly not helpful for the installer to have no feedback in the process. Glad it worked out for you! [Edit: issue #13958 opened]
Hello Steve,
I am wondering did you see the small pop asking you to restart your computer? I have done some testing on Win 11 and Win 10. I found it was installing 18 ok from 17 if I waited until I was asked to restart my machine. However, I tried restarting after I gave permission to change my device but before I received the message to restart, the after the restart I also was on 17 still.
I am wondering if the installation was taking longer than a minute on your machine for some reason or maybe even the process stalling.
Ross.
