Error when making a PDF with if no default printer is set up
Bloom requires that there be a default printer before it can make a PDF (we know, that’s weird… this problem comes from the embedded Firefox engine). It if doesn’t find one, you will get an error:
Bloom requires access to a printer in order to make a PDF, even though you are not printing.
If you don’t have a real printer, try setting the printer to “Microsoft XPS Document Writer” or “Microsoft Print to PDF”.
Cannot set default printer on Windows
After installing one, if you try to set it as the default printer, some Windows 7 users have received this error:
Win32 error: the printer name is invalid.
Here is how to solve this error. Watch this video that shows how to solve this problem, or just follow these steps:
- Click Start, type “regedit”, and press Enter. You will need to have “administrator” permissions to use this program.
NOTE: Take care in editing the registry, as it controls many aspects of how the computer works.
- Navigate to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current version > Windows
- Right click on the Windows folder you will see there and select “Permissions.”
- In the dialogue box that opens, look at the list under “Groups or user names” and make sure that “Everyone” is in the list. Click on it.
- In the section that says “Permissions for Everyone”, check “Full Control.”
- Click “Apply.”
- Restart your computer.
- Go back to the Devices and Printers Control Panel and try to set the printer as the Default printer. That should work now.
If “Everyone” is not in the list of “Groups or user names”, you will need to add it. Here is a video that shows how to add Everyone to the Groups or user names list. Watch the video, or just follow these steps:
- In the Permissions dialogue box, click the “Add” button, type in “Everyone,” and Click OK.
- Now “Everyone” is in the list, and you can follow steps 6-9 above.
